Look, we get it: most scrappy filmmakers (really filmmakers in general) are often tight on cash. But I also know that we have some of the most empathetic hearts, and want to ensure a healthy future and a preserved past of the filmmaking.

So in that spirit, here are a few organizations to consider supporting on this Giving Tuesday:

The Film Foundation: Founded by Martin Scorsese in 1990, The Film Foundation is fully dedicated to the restoration of films, especially those originating on film. To date, they have restored over 1,100 films. Which is no small feat considering each film can cost up to $450,000 to restore. I like their “1 Frame, 1 Dollar,” fundraising campaign, in which you select a number of frames at a dollar each, from the current restoration projects.

Blackstar: While best known for their growing Blackstar Film Festival, the organization also supports several seminars and labs, aimed at highlighting and developing the works of Black, Brown, and Indigenous filmmakers.

Women Who Make Movies: For over 50 years, and with more than 2,800 filmmakers receiving support, Women Who Make Movies has a clear mission in supporting the production and distribution of films by women.

Outfest: With multiple fests every year, along with programs, workshops and other events, Outfest is one of the largest, and most visible organizations dedicated to the creation and exhibition of LGBTQ+ stories.

I would also encourage you to look into the organizations that are dedicated to independent filmmaking in your region, as most major cities have some (even if limited) organizations to support local filmmakers.

Happy Giving Tuesday to all who celebrate!
