Getting an independent feature made is only half the battle. Next comes the long, winding road of distribution. Well Kickstarter and Tubi hope to help. Back in June, the two companies launched “The Filmstream Collective,” a fund provided by Tubi, intended to help fund near-final projects, and get them across the finish line.
The new partnership goes a step further, with Tubi providing a streaming home for select feature projects on Kickstarter. (And Kickstarter alone.) It’s an interesting move for Kickstarter, as more and more crowdfunding sites like Seed & Spark and Indiegogo spring up, some more tailored for filmmakers. The projects featured on Tubi are only those that were part of The Filmstream Collective initiative.
There’s a lot of room for improvement in the distribution space for Indies, and we have some of our own ideas, (stay tuned…) but any initiative that can lower the barrier a bit to getting on a widely available streaming platform sounds good to us.
You can view the first 21 films to be part of the partnership here, along with additional Kickstarter films that went to the platform.
