I don’t know how often you think about Garfield, the cantankerous animated cat, but one small town in France has been thinking about him every day for over 43 years. Silly Little Plastic Cat tells the story of a community in Northwest France that has dealt with the debris of thousands of Garfield phones washing ashore since the 1980’s.
Zack Grant’s documentary is a clever look at the ramifications of plastic waste and our largely disposable culture. For filmmakers, the project is also a textbook example of how you can make compelling content, that is branded: The documentary was produced for Back Market, a site specializing in selling refurbished technology.
Grant has woven an attention-grabbing documentary, that touches on the larger issues of consumerism, without ever feeling heavy-handed, or sponsor-influenced.
