It has become an annual tradition for the Internet Archive to celebrate January 1st as Public Domain Day. Each year, the organization celebrates the works entering the public domain in the new year. And when the calendar moves to January 1, 2026, several works from 1930, including films, music, and novels will become public domain, meaning they can be freely used in new works, without copyright restrictions.
As they’ve done in previous years, to celebrate those newly available works, Internet Archive is holding a Public Domain Day Film Remix Contest, with $1,500 in prizes on the line. Contestants must use one new work entering the public domain on January 1st, and using more public domain works is encouraged.
Projects must be 2-3 minutes long, and the deadline to enter is January 7, 2026.
It’s a great exercise to flex those creative muscles over the holidays, and you might just end up a winner!
