Just a few years ago the “golden age” of streaming led to a resurgence in appreciation (and funding) for documentary projects. These days many non-profits have exited the market, and documentarians are facing challenges in financing and distribution.

In 2020 Sandbox Films was formed with a focus on documentaries with science at their heart, providing creative and financial support for projects that “explore the world (and beyond) with curiosity, creativity and humanity.”

In its first six years the studio has boasted a slate including the Oscar-nominated Fire of Love and Werner Herzog’s Fireball, and has six films debuting this year.

Jessica Harrop, Executive Director of Sandbox Films, joins us on to discuss the unique position Sandbox holds and the value of creating science-focused documentaries today.
